ESPN Ups Second Screen Game with World Cup Plans
By Chris Tribbey
NBC enjoyed immense success with its second screen offerings for the recent Sochi winter Olympics. For this year’s World Cup in Brazil, ESPN is looking to do even better.
All 64 games of the 2014 FIFA World Cup — airing on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes — will be available live via both ESPN3 and the network’s TV everywhere app, WatchESPN. ESPN’s month-long, round-the-clock coverage will include news, analysis, commentary and interactive features, available on both WatchESPN and ESPN3 in the U.S., and internationally via ESPN’s multi-language, multiplatform soccer app, ESPN FC, available for both iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.
“All sports fans will come together for the World Cup in Brazil, and there’s no better time — and no greater opportunity — to connect fans globally across ESPN digital media than now,” said John Kosner, EVP of ESPN digital and print media. “By creating the most comprehensive experience that is live, personal and social, we will be at the top of our game in serving sports fans with anytime, anywhere, any device access to every match, goal, star player, news story and commentary. It will be a global effort befitting of the events in Brazil.”
The live coverage of the games will also be streamed via ESPN on Xbox Live, Apple TV, Roku and Amazon Fire TV, reaching an estimated audience of more than 92 million households. All ten ABC telecasts will also be accessible via the Watch ABC app, but only in select markets through an affiliated provider.
ESPN3’s multi-screen offering will also include alternate camera feeds for every telecast and real-time highlight reels. And the ESPN FC app, supporting both English and Spanish languages, will include in-progress clips for the World Cup, studio coverage and commentary video.
Even after the World Cup, the ESPN FC app will have legs, covering European leagues, Liga MX and Major League Soccer, offering match-specific, programming clips, live scores, news and more.
